Pediatric Procedures

Patients range in age from premature infants through late adolescence...

The most common condition treated by pediatric urologists is urinary tract infection (UTI). Other conditions include the following:

  • Abnormally located urethral opening (hypospadias)
  • Backup of urine from the bladder into the ureter (vesicoureteral reflux [VUR])
  • Bedwetting (nocturnal enuresis)
  • Distention of the kidney in utero (antenatal hydronephrosis)
  • Ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJ obstruction; may cause kidney damage)

Patients range in age from premature infants through late adolescence and, for some children with complicated problems, into young adulthood. Operations are performed on an outpatient basis whenever possible.

Pediatric Minimally Invasive Surgery

As in adults, minimally invasive surgical techniques can be applied to children as well. Laparoscopic removal and partial removal of kidneys are routinely performed at Kaiser Permanente Orange County.

More impressively, renal reconstructive procedures, a common procedure required in the pediatric population can be performed laproscopically as well.
