Kidney Procedures
Laparoscopic Radical Nephrectomy
Indication
Curative therapy for kidney cancer (renal cell carcinoma). Kidney cancer occurs most often in people between the ages of 50 and 70, and affects men almost twice as often as women.
Diagnosis
Early diagnosis of kidney cancer is important. As with most types of cancer, the earlier the tumor is discovered, the better a patient's chances for survival. Tumors discovered at an early stage often respond well to treatment.
Treatment
Complete surgical removal if large and/or centrally located. If the tumor is small and located on the periphery, often times only part of the kidney needs to be removed.
Traditional Approach
Large incision at the flank, sometimes with removal of a rib.
Minimally Invasive Approach
Small key-hole incisions just big enough to allow specialized instruments to enter the abdomen. This result is less post operative pain and quicker patient recovery.
Laparoscopic Partial Nephrectomy
Indication
If a renal tumor is peripherally located, oftentimes the entire kidney not be removed. This is called a partial nephrectomy and can be performed using minimally invasive surgical techniques.
