Department of Urology
The Department was originally started by Dr. Frank Newman. Under his leadership, the department grew and began to include sub-specialists in pediatrics, infertility, erectile dysfunction, female urology, and endourology as well as an academic affiliation with the University of California, Irvine (UCI).
The arrival of Dr. Richard Szabo, the current chairman, sparked the next revolution: minimally invasive surgery. The Department now boasts a fellowship-trained laparoscopist/ oncologist and eight other urologists who employ minimally invasive surgery as the standard approach for malignant diseases of the kidney, prostate, bladder, and testicles. Our vast experience has expanded and now includes reconstruction of the urinary tract in adults and children as well. The depth, breadth, and quality of this work has resulted in UCI sending four residents per year as an integral part of their training program.
